If you've stopped by the Library this week, you may have seen our display all about Banned Books Week. A few of you have even asked me what the week is for, or what a Banned Book is. Well, I'm here to tell you.
A banned book is any book that someone has spoken up, and said "I don't think people should be allowed to read this." And has convinced a school, library, or bookstore not to let people have it any more. Most of the Banned Books in this country became banned because someone was worried about young people reading it.Put more simply, those people don't want you to have the freedom to read those books. Generally speaking, we at the library think you should have the freedom to read any book you like, and to stop reading it whenever you want.
Here's a video I found on youtube that shows some of the most often banned books, and why some people don't want you to read them. Take a look, I bet you'll be surprised! We'd love to hear your thoughts on the idea too, so don't be afraid to comment here on the blog!
